Chapter Four – Bootin’ The Blue Eyed Birdie
You decided that since any day could be your last right now with your confusing touch and go relationship with Warren that you would at least do things how you wanted to. Like eating lunch in the cafeteria for starters.
To feel a little braver and just incase you had to hide quickly, you dressed in a camouflage parachute pants, a crème lace top, green V-neck sweater, and black Combat boots, but that accessory was self explanatory.
You looked around for Warren, Layla, Maj, Will, Ethan or even Zach. You hadn’t seen any of them all day and couldn’t help but start to worry a huge deal about it.
Warren had met up with Stronghold and the others after Zach and Ethan had called him in the boys’ bathroom in the morning.
“What’s this about?” he asked impatiently. Will and Layla both looked flushed like they had did a lot of running lately and Maj was irked and some strands of her purple streaked hair were out of her buns and in her face.
“You haven’t seen any?” Ethan asked surprised.
“Just get to the catch, Popsicle” Warren continued tensely. Layla gave Will a look before Maj took the assertive route and handed him one of the pink flyers. He studied the paper without expression. On it was a picture of you a little younger and dancing on a couch in a fluffy pink princess type dress with a piece of lyrics in your handwriting photo copied on it with the question Warren Peace’s soulmate? at the bottom corner—it was a regular get back that only someone you knows you could do.
“Warren?” Layla called to him. His hand ignited and the paper fell to the floor in ashes.
“Did you get them all?” he asked pointing to the stack in Layla’s hands, the one under Will’s foot, Zach’s under his arm, Maj’s on the floor and Ethan’s in his bag.
“We tried our best man, but homegirl could see them anywhere” Zach stated shrugging.
“Humph. Put them in the garbage then” he directed in an odd calm. They all did as he said and he burned the rest of the papers a little too keenly.
“Are you going to come with us to look the rest?” Will asked as Warren walked around them.
“No, I have someone to talk to” he told them walking towards the front of the school and getting more heated with each step.
You paid for your lunch and sat down at an empty table. You couldn’t find the rest of them anywhere. You hoped they didn’t choose to ditch you or anything like that. It wouldn’t be a great self esteem booster. You almost screamed as the brunette named Cyd formerly know as your best friend sat down beside you with a brown haired and glass green eyed senior.
“Hey Icy, have you met my boyfriend Marco Helton?” she asked with malicious eyes as she took a clean bite into your apple. You shook your head and involuntarily shivered as he elevator eyed you.
“Nope I haven’t had the luxury of knowing your business seeing as we haven’t been friends for some weeks” you answered sarcastically. Her smile widened into a grin like the Cheshire Cat.
“And that’s such a same. We could have had double dates with you and Warren” she said in a mock sad tone. You made a face.
“If I was dating Warren.” She raised her brow.
“Oh, my mistake. I didn’t figure that he would reject your obvious feelings for him. You even had the courtesy to write them down” she gushed exchanging a look with Marco. He handed a piece of paper on her cue to you.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Warren walked into the cafeteria burning more strongly then ever.
Warren saw Cyd in an empty corridor using a compact to fix her eye shadow.
“If only you could do that to your inner beauty” he snapped. She turned around and almost groaned.
“What the hell are you doing here? And where’s your shadow—get sick of her already?” she returned scornfully. His fist tightened.
“Why can’t you just leave her alone? Having her miss a jerk like you is punishment enough” he cut. Her face darkened.
“You don’t decide what I can or cannot do. She might have only kissed you but I’m not stupid. I know she’s been looking at you differently since the beginning of classes” Cyd told him with a smirk. “I, for one can’t see anything that special about you unless you’re into the fatherless type.” He threw a fireball towards her on instinct but there was a flash and then only a dropped compact where she stood.
“Well that sucks” he said before turning to the only other place she could be—talking to you.
“Is that so?” Marco asked placing the paper in front of you and watching with Cyd as your features drained of color. The rest of the gang rushed into the cafeteria.
“I told you we shouldn’t have waited for Zach to tie his shoes” Maj huffed crossing her hands over her chest. The blonde shrugged.
“A guy’s gear has to look its best at all times.” You got up slowly and the whole school watched as you stood beside Warren.
“You know that chorus wasn’t mine, in all truthfulness? That’s some played out crap that only Cyd’s microscopic brain can come up” you slashed. Cyd got up with her boy toy.
“What’s that suppose to mean?” Warren looked at you reproachfully.
“Yeah, Icy. Dim it down for them, they’re a little slow. Combine the pair of them has the IQ of today’s special of mystery meat” he answered contemptuously. You shook your head in mock thought.
“A container of stale milk for him, I know she’s stupider” you ended. “Enough talk.” You and Warren spread out to different sides of the room with your respective opponents. You rubbed your hands together before getting ready with your bow.
Ms. Powers sat doing the rest of the day’s work at her desk firmly impressed with her students. It had been awhile before any of them had gotten in serious problems. She smiled.
“They’re might be hope for them all yet” she stated aloud.
“MS. POWERS! MS. POWERS!” Mr. Boy rushed into her office panting breathlessly. His brown tie was blown half hazardously to his shoulder. “In the cafeteria…a fight…” She sighed faintly and led the way.
“And just when I thought they were changing” she muttered disappointedly.
Cyd sent a flood of ice your way and you ducked and rolled over a table for dear life. Warren had better luck detaining Marco seeing as his strongest power at that moment seemed to be disappointing his girlfriend with failing.
“Good one!” Warren called to you distractedly. You gave him a quick glance and smile. He was so intense and strong when he clashed with someone. He was something like the terminator but more attractive and with fire. Cyd blasted another wave of ice but you by the time you skirted the attack both you and a table got caught in it. You flew across to the other side of the wall and slid down it with a dull thump. They crowded around you in a semi circle.
“Is she alright?” Layla asked kneeing down next to Warren to get a bitter look at you. He checked your pulse then brushed your hair of your eyes to get a better look at your face for injuries. You only had a scrape above on your cheek. Cyd went over to a hurting Marco and helped him stand up.
“I guess you’re going to give up now. I knew you couldn’t stand up against me, Icy. Face it, without me you’re nothing!” she stated sneeringly. The other students gasped as you began to get up unsteadily. Layla offered you a hand when you swayed but Warren brushed it off.
“She has to do this by herself.” They cleared the way and you gripped to your arrow.
“That’s where you’re wrong, Cyd. I never needed you at all!” you said before sending an arrow spiraling towards them.
Heels clicked towards the cafeteria and you looked on in confusion as your arrow disappeared.
“Would someone like explaining to me what’s going on?” Ms. Powers called from the room’s entrance. Busted.
Cyd and Marco led the way to the Principals office lending on each other for support while you and Warren trailed a little behind them for obvious reasoning. The adrenaline from the battle was wearing off and you started to panic. Almost like he could feel your worry, Warren gave your hand a split second stroke. It was more than enough to send your hormones into overdrive. But you didn’t really think about what it was doing to him…
“Mr. Peace would you like to fill everyone else on the specialties of the detention room?” the principal started. He sighed.
“Your powers don’t work in here so don’t waste you time” he muttered. You moved you desk closer to Warren’s and Cyd did the same with Marco. Ms. Powers looked at you all regretfully.
“I’m firmly disappointed in all of you. Some of you are returning offenders but for the new ones”—she looked from you to Cyd—“I am even more so in. Your behavior is unimpressed and goes against the virtues of this school. I hope you all have a magnificent time thinking about how to solve your problems without resorting to violence. Mr. Boy can only run so much before injuring himself.” She left the white room, the door closing behind her. Cyd turned to you and Warren angrily.
“One more word and I’m flame broiling you both” Warren stated dangerously. She shut her mouth and let the anger slide off her face.
You and Warren finally escaped the silence of the room after school.
“Thanks for helping like that” you told him after you got your stuff out of your locker. He shrugged.
“Any excuse to kick ass, is a good excuse for kicking ass” he confirmed good-naturedly. You giggled. “So about that flyer. You made the verse?” You nodded but didn’t catch the way his lips curled.
“Yes, one of my masterpieces if I can go so far” you explained walking along the school stairs with him. “I had a great muse.” You turned back and winked at him before boarding the bus. He quirked a brow.
“That’s exactly what a little birdie told me.” The rest of the students got on the bus and this time Warren had someone to sit beside.
